No results found.International commitments relating to biodiversity in sustainable Deep-Sea Fishing in the ABNJ are embodied in a wide range of legal and policy instruments, implemented by States and eight regional bodies working on fisheries. Global committments may arise from UNGA resolutions, UN agencies or similar. The most relevant regulations regarding management and protection of VMEs at the global level are: UNGA Resolutions related to bottom fisheries, the FAO Guidelines on the management of deepsea f isheries in the high seas, FAO technical guidelines for responsible fisheries. No results found.The brief provides a summary of the current state of knowledge and further information needs for valuing deep-sea sponge ground ecosystem services. The scoping study was carried out to ascertain what information and data are available on the economic value of ABNJ ecosystem services, and to assess whether (and how) a quantitative/monetary valuation might be possible. Its objective was to document and critically review current knowledge on deep-sea ecosystem-economic linkages, so as to identify n eeds, niches and options for undertaking a study to assess the economic value of ABNJ deep-sea ecosystem services. While the study considered sponges and sponge grounds alongside other deep-sea species and habitats, it did not focus solely on them. -

No results found.The Asia-Pacific region, despite impressive economic growth, is home to 490 million people still suffering from chronic hunger and it accounts for 62 percent of undernourished people in the world. Other trends and topics that need to be taken into account include population growth, urbanization and change of dietary patterns, issues of malnutrition and food safety, climate change and disaster risk, and unsustainable production and environmental degradation. Therefore, in order to achieve FAO’s mandate related to SDG Goals, there is a need for placing sustainable agriculture and food systems in the center of the agenda applying the five principles of sustainable food and agriculture. In this regard, FAO plans to undertake to support member states in achieving SDGs through five Regional Initiatives in 2018-19, notably Zero Hunger, Blue Growth, Climate Change, One Health, and the Inter-regional Initiative on SIDS for the Pacific, which obtained endorsement at the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in July 2017.
